In May 2021, Fox Construction were appointed to deliver on a remarkable build – a new clubhouse for Flushing Sailing Club. Perched on the Flushing quayside, in Falmouth harbour, the story of this build project was one of true community spirit. Not to mention the outstanding design detailing and application from all involved.
The finished building now has superb facilities, enabling it to support the racing calendar and associated Club events. Not only this, but the space is perfect for wider community use with regular yoga and Pilates classes, writing groups, coffee mornings, local organisation meetings, and hiring for the general public.
Built for the sailing club and the community
Thanks to this new design, the clubhouse now has a floor-to-ceiling glass front with bi-fold doors on either side. A great addition that allows more ventilation in the summer months, as well as easy access to the outside quay area, which seats another 30-40 people on picnic tables, overlooking the water. The overall design is inspired by the bow of a ship, with its sloping roof design and upstairs balcony, ideal for viewing the race start and finishing line as well as for giving speeches!
This building is now fully accessible for wheelchairs and prams via the main entrance which has a ramp with handrails. It also hosts a fully equipped disabled toilet and shower. The interior bar follows the theme of the ocean, crafted in a bowed sea blue wood clinker plank design. It’s beautiful to look at, and great for the myriad events that the club hosts year-round.
The mezzanine Race Office that has spectacular views of the harbour, can also be used as a breakout room. This room is soundproofed and has the added delight of double doors to the balcony, so you can make the most of those sunny days even when work must be done. Ideal for private, work or social groups of small numbers.
Without support and donations, the project would not have been possible
Without the support and donations from the community the clubs' dream would not have been made a reality. Here at Fox Construction we are extremely proud to have been the building contractors, and grateful for the support this project received along the way. The community have really invested their time and their money into helping us, and the Sailing Club, to create this wonderful new home just in time to mark their centenary year.
Flushing Sailing Club have always been a welcoming face for the sport of sailing on our shores, and we believe that this building reflects that. It is a place where anyone is made to feel welcome, and where they can enjoy the sport without needing to be a part of it.
The modern design of this building was created to be accessible for all, a chance for inclusivity to take centre stage and introduce people from all walks of life into the world of sailing. The construction of this club is just the first stage in their plans to develop the facilities. In stage 2 the Club hopes to install a pontoon, accessible from the quay to enable water access to people of all abilities
The building itself was a challenge, given that it sits on New Quay, a listed structure along the River Fal. This is also an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and a conservation area. Luckily for us, all project partners, volunteers, members of the club and local citizens have taken a supportive approach to this build. We, and the club, have been shown nothing but support from the start, and we think this clubhouse brings a modern and beautiful building to a historic setting.
